Instacart Requirements That All Shoppers Must Meet In 2024

If you’re looking to become an Instacart Shopper, you’ll need to apply and get approved for the gig.

But, Instacart doesn’t approve just anyone. There are certain things that the company looks for – both good and bad.

The Requirements Depend on Type

Before you apply for Instacart, it is important to understand the different between the types of Instacart Shoppers.

Each type serve different roles within the company’s operations, and come with their own set of expectations and requirements.

In-store shoppers are assigned to a specific grocery store and are responsible for preparing and packing orders either for full-service shoppers to deliver or for customer pickup.

They are paid an hourly wage and work scheduled shifts, and they do not require a vehicle.

On the other hand, full-service shoppers are independent contractors who shop for and deliver groceries directly to customers.

They are paid per order, and their earnings are influenced by the number of items, type of items, and driving distance.

Full-service shoppers have the flexibility to work as little or as often as they desire, but they must have access to a vehicle.

Instacart Requirements For Full-Service Shoppers

  1. Age: Must be at least 18 years old.
  2. Driver’s License: A valid driver’s license is required.
  3. Vehicle: Regular access to a reliable vehicle along with insurance coverage.
  4. Physical Ability: Able to lift at least 50 pounds with or without accommodation.
  5. Smartphone: Must have a smartphone capable of running the Instacart app.
  6. Background Check: Pass a criminal background check, which checks for criminal history in the past 7 years, and a clean driving record with no major violations in the past 7 years and no more than 3 minor violations in the past 3 years.
  7. Alcohol Delivery: Must be at least 21 years old to accept orders that include alcohol.
  8. Insurance: Need to have vehicle insurance that meets state requirements, and possibly additional rideshare insurance.

Instacart Requirements For In-Store Shoppers

  1. Age: Must be at least 18 years old.
  2. Work Authorization: Legally able to work in the U.S.
  3. Physical Ability: Able to lift at least 50 pounds with or without accommodation.
  4. Smartphone: Must have access to a smartphone capable of running the Instacart app.
  5. Background Check: Pass a criminal background check.

Both types of shoppers must undergo a background check as a crucial part of the application process, typically taking 5-10 business days.

Full-service shoppers also need to handle their own taxes as independent contractors, while in-store shoppers, being W-2 employees, have different tax implications.
